Legendary Detroit jazz guitarist-composer A. Spencer Barefield celebrates the 43rd anniversary of Creative Music at the DIA — a ground-breaking, award-winning, 13-year concert series of Avant Garde and Revolutionary music he curated and produced at the Detroit Institute of Art from 1979-1992. Barefield brings together past, present and future with three newly commissioned works by NEA Jazz Master Roscoe Mitchell, new works by Barefield, and a star-studded cast including GRAMMY-nominated string quartet PUBLIQuartet, bassist John-Paul Norpoth, violist and Detroit native Jason Amos, Art Ensemble of Chicago bassist Jaribu Shahid, and Detroit drummer Djallo Djakate. This performance will feature PUBLIQuartet in the world premiere of Roscoe Mitchell’s latest string quartet “Cards 11-11-2020” and two other world premieres by Roscoe Mitchell and new works from A Spencer Barefield. This performance is made possible with support from Creative Arts Collective, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, New Music USA, Sphinx Organization, and Rebirth Inc.
